Forget the economy. 2009 served as proof that a recording artist can stay active well beyond anyone's expectations, and even past the point where anyone cares. As proof, I give you the following list of studio (yes, studio) albums that were released this past year.
No, really, these actually came out. All of them. I didn't invent anything.
- Reel Big Fish - Fame, Fortune and Fornication
- Bruce Springsteen - Working on a Dream
- Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague
- The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die
- U2 - No Line on the Horizon
- Yngwie Malmsteen - Angels of Love
- Coolio - From the Bottom 2 the Top
- Billy Ray Cyrus - Back to Tennessee
- Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe
- Jars of Clay - The Long Fall Back to Earth
- The Crystal Method - Divided by Night
- Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown
- Busta Rhymes - Back on My B.S.
- Eminem - Relapse
- Iggy Pop - Préliminaires
- Marilyn Manson - The High End of Low
- Dave Matthews Band - Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
- Sonic Youth - The Eternal
- Elvis Costello - Secret, Profane & Sugarcane
- Dinosaur Jr. - Farm
- The Lemonheads - Varshons (I'm not sure to what extent this qualifies, as it was a collection of covers, but since their cover of "Mrs. Robinson" was the only thing of theirs that I ever heard on the radio, I'm not going to let that bother me)
- Third Eye Blind - Ursa Major
- Insane Clown Posse - Bang! Pow! Boom!
- Megadeth - Endgame
- Kiss - Sonic Boom
- Five for Fighting - Slice
- Rammstein - Liebe ist für alle da
- Creed - Full Circle
- Slayer - World Painted Blood
- Mary J. Blige - Stronger with Each Tear
Unfortunately, Limp Bizkit's Gold Cobra was not completed in time for a 2009 release.
